Cornelia Street Suite, New York City
The Cornelia Street Suite occupies the top floor of a West Village duplex in New York City, one of Manhattan's most intimate and storied neighbourhoods. The project by Magdalena Keck Interior Design unifies a 550 square foot bedroom and bathroom into a single suite, divided at will by two large sliding panels.
The material palette is built on monochromatic restraint and textural depth: honed travertine, white oak, stainless steel, and white paint. In this precisely edited space, a custom wooden bathtub in ash becomes the emotional centre of the room. Its warm, living grain stands in quiet dialogue with the cool stone that lines the walls and floor. Wood and travertine, warmth and mineral calm, each amplifying the other.
The bespoke bathtub was crafted as a Puari 165, UWD's soaking form rooted in the tradition of the ofuro, the Japanese onsen bathtub ritual of deep immersion and stillness. Handcrafted from ash, its natural figure brings an element of organic warmth that no other material in the palette could provide. Set against the full-height travertine surround and framed by a window, this wooden bathtub transforms the act of bathing into a moment of quiet presence, true to both the Puari design and the spirit of the space it inhabits.
